Asheville Area Guide

Things To Do In Asheville

Asheville can be regarded as six distinct districts, each with its own character and flavor.

  • Downtown Asheville is the center and is the oldest part of town.
  • West Asheville is a funky, newer area with gritty roots and tons of character.
  • Biltmore Village is the area around the entrance to the Biltmore Estate.
  • The River Arts District is a recently revitalized industrial area.
  • South Asheville is a residential area with a great deal of commercial development along its main corridor.
  • North Asheville is where you’ll find our office in one of the grand historic homes that distinguish this section.

Downtown Asheville

Downtown Asheville is home to the old city, and you will find some beautiful architecture in the Grove Arcade area and the historic downtown buildings. Lots of restaurants, Asheville breweries and shopping options are located here.

River Arts District (RAD)

The River Arts District is a revitalized industrial area that boasts some of the best dining, shopping and breweries in town. As its name suggests, there are a lot of artists who have studios here. It’s located on the low lying area beside the river at the midpoint between downtown and West Asheville. It’s a mecca for music, art, dining, shopping and exploring.

West Asheville

With its working class roots and recent popularity as a residential area for young professionals, West Asheville is one of the most vibrant sections of town. Here you will find a funky, colorful diversity of people, businesses, homes, restaurants, and shopping. Because of its allure, this part of town is enjoying a period of growth and revitalization. Take some time to get to know this part of town, because it is well worth exploring.

Biltmore Village

Biltmore Village is a charming collection of shops, restaurants and other attractions beside the entrance to the Biltmore Estate. It’s a nice area to take a stroll and enjoy the sights. It’s located south of Downtown, past the Mission hospital campus, and is the midpoint between Downtown and South Asheville.

South Asheville

Hendersonville Road and the Sweeten Creek Road run parallel to one another in this area.  The commercial corridor along these roads and the surrounding community make up South Asheville. The Blue Ridge Parkway crosses through town here on its meandering path through the mountains. You will also find Biltmore Park here, which is a thoughtfully designed community of shops and homes. This part of town is much more spread out and requires transportation to navigate.

North Asheville

North Asheville is the old residential section of town and features lots of beautiful old homes both large and small. Here you will find the Historic Montford neighborhood, the UNC Asheville campus, the Asheville Country Club and Beaver Lake. There are lots of great restaurants and shops along the Merrimon Avenue corridor, and our office is located in the Five Points neighborhood within walking distance of downtown.
